The members of SES have been involved in renewable energy design projects ranging from solar domestic water heating at local swimming pools to stand alone hydrogen fuel cell projects. The members of SES have worked alongside researchers at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, NV to develop a control system for the renewable energy fuel cell (REF) system being developed in DRI's Energy Lab. The REF system consists of 2kW of PV panels, 3kW of wind turbines, a 5kW electrolyzer and a 2kW fuel cell stack. The system has been designed as an alternative to battery based off-grid renewable energy systems utilizing hydrogen gas as an energy storage device. The members of SES were tasked with creating a control system that would monitor all of the sensors within the system and ensure that the electrical load was always met, enabling the system to operate free of user input.
